| The Social Action Club, an extension of social studies classes is involved internationally with Building with Books
as well as with local concerns. During the summer of 2000, Scott Liebertz, a faculty member, and Eusebio Velez '03 went to Bolivia to help work on a school being
built by Building with Books. During the summer of 1999 Iveliz Oramas '00 had gone to India as a part of this same program. (above left)
The Social Action/ BWB Club Is Full of Activity By JaVonne Wells and Natisha Campbell The Social Action/BWB Club is in full force this year. This is the third year Kolbe Cathedral has been affiliated with the Building With Books organization. The club has come a long way and strives for the best every year. Over the past two years, the club has been actively involved in community service. We volunteer our time with the elderly at Golden Heights Retirement Home and the children at Bridgeport Hospital. The club has also joined other BWB clubs to clean the East Side of Bridgeport. Working side by side with students from Truman High School in the Bronx, we helped beautify a park and pull weeds and garbage out of a community garden. Recently, the club visited Truman High School and spent the day going to classes with students who are part of their BWB club. Because it is a large public school, the atmosphere was different. Students at Truman must go through metal detectors every morning, and they are not required to wear uniforms. The school building is huge (it has to accomodate over 2500 students) but very impressive. The following week, about ten students from Truman spent the day with us. They found our student body to be extremely friendly and were amazed at how clean the school is - particularly the bathrooms. Some additional service projects that our club has been involved in are the recycling program and the recent canned food drive to benefit the hungry and homeless at Thomas Merton House. In addition to community service, we also stay busy by raising money to help build schools in third world countries. This year we are sponsoring a school in Haiti. It is being built in a remote part of the island that is only accessible by foot. We have also been corresponding with some of the villagers through email (Building With Books has provided the village with a satellite and a computer). |
